I know this has come up before, but no-one seemed to know the answer then. Problem is as follows: I have an APC Back-UPS 650 and a CD with PowerChute v.5.0.2. So far so good. PowerChute tells me the UPS is 'on-line' but does not appear to get a signal from the UPS when it goes on battery. I'm using a standard serial cable. APC's website suggests using their #940-0020B cable, which isn't even in their catalogue.

The 940-0020 is, however, but if I were to order it, they'd charge me almost 50 EURO for it (like 42,5 $)! I only paid 90 EURO for the UPS (bargain since it's brand new).

If you see the picture of the APC cable on the APC website, it even hasn't got a dongle, so I can hardly imagine it has some special electronics in it.So, the 42,5 $ question is: does anyone know the pinout so one could solder his own cable for a couple of bucks?Thanx. I kept a diagram of some APC cables somewhere. Here have a look. It's not the exact one but I think it's close enough for you to give it a shot.code:BackUPS 940-0023A (grey cable)Use with 'basic' signaling.DE9S DE9PPC UPS1- 12 -23 34 /-45-. 56 67 78 89 -9 gndSmart UPS 940-0024B (black cable)Use with 'advanced' signaling.DE9S DE9PPC UPS/-1 /-1-2. I did some more searching on the 'net, and I came up with this for the PN 940-0020B cable (using 9-pin DB 9 connectors):PC serial port side UPS sideFemale connector Male connectorpin 5 (ground) pin 4pin 8 (power failure) pin 2pin 4 (ups shutdown) pin 1This is all you need to make it work, I tried it!Alternatively, you can connect pin 1 on the pc side (female) to pin 5 (UPS side, male) and connect this to pin 8 with a 10k ohm resistor. This would enable a battery low signal from the UPS.

Didn't try it for lack of a resistor and don't need it anyway.Microsoft actually lists this information (article ID Q98885)! Have been searching the APC site for Microsoft CD Keys, but apparantly, they didn't return the favour. View image: /infopop/emoticons/iconbiggrin.gifAnyway, thanks for your suggestions, guys. Sorry I bothered you with it while I could find it elsewhere. Hope this might help someone else, though.
